Jeanne Penjan Lassu

Jeanne Penjan Lassus (1991, France) is a Thai-French artist and filmmaker based in Bangkok. Their works draw from reflections on sensory perceptions and porosity of spaces and bodies. Enquiring how we – humans and other beings – sense and make sense of our environments, Jeanne’s practice focuses on how our perceptions shape our experiences, languages, and the way we move and extend into space. Researching situated and embodied knowledge, Jeanne is interested in the intimate and interdependent relationships we form with places and beings, and the ways in which these knowledges act as forms of resistance.

At MORPHO, Jeanne will be developing 'Monads and fragments', a project tracing objects and plants from Southeast Asia that would have transited through Antwerp at the height of its commercial golden age in the 15th and 16th centuries. Centering the Scheldt River and approaching it as memory, the project entwines archival research in the collections of Antwerp's museums with informal, poetic research through the practice of mudlarking along the Scheldt's banks. Combining these two practices, 'Monads and fragments' engages with questions of research, archive and memory from a decolonial perspective, recentering the sensorial, speculative and tactile.

Jeanne studied at the Beaux-Arts de Paris. Their work has been shown in various festivals and art spaces, most notably TONO Festival Mexico; Ghost 2568—a video and performance arts series; the 7th Bangkok Experimental Film Festival; EXiS Experimental Film and Video Festival in Seoul; the Alserkal Arts Foundation Dubai; and Bangkok Arts and Culture Center. They participated in the Ocean Fellowship 2020, organized by TBA21, and was one of the recipients of the Alserkal Art Foundation Research Grant 2020.
