Moritz Nebenführ
Resident
Moritz Nebenführ (Germany) works between Munich and Brussels. His practice moves between curatorial research, exhibition-making and theatre, and focuses on artistic self-organisation, institutional critique and the material conditions of cultural production.
At MORPHO, Moritz will develop a historical and curatorial investigation into the Vereniging voor Plastische Kunstenaars (VPK), a largely forgotten Belgian artists’ rights organisation founded in Antwerp in the early 1970s. Now surviving only in scattered archives, footnotes and the memories of former members, the VPK provided an early forum in which artists organised collectively to address questions of representation, labour precarity, social protections and the democratic accountability of cultural institutions. Through archival research and interviews, he seeks to reconstruct the organisation’s activities, motivations and eventual decline, and to reflect on how artists positioned themselves as civic actors when existing representational mechanisms proved insufficient.
Moritz has worked as a curator both independently and in institutional contexts such as Badischer Kunstverein and Artists Space, and co-ran the project space Linden (Düsseldorf). Recent (co-)curated exhibitions include The Secret of Futility (Kunstverein München) and Jef Geys – Kempens Informatieblad (Künstlerhaus Bremen). As a theatre maker, he collaborates with Lennart Boyd Schürmann under the name ‚Bruch‘-, with performances presented at Kölnischer Kunstverein, Theater Neumarkt (Zurich), NS-Dokumentationszentrum (Munich) and Münchner Kammerspiele, among others.
