Guy Woueté

Guy Woueté’s wide-ranging practice engages with questions of social responsibility and symbols of domination in a globalizing world. Using history as a material, Woueté aims to break down conventional attitudes that nourish racism, discrimination, paternalism, and alienation in all its forms. Through various processes of recording the real, Woueté collects and explores traces of colonialism in the present. He then combines these moments and experiences in collage, installation, performance, video, photography, sculpture, painting, and artist’s books.

Guy Woueté (1980, Douala, Cameroon) studied sculpture and painting in Douala and was a resident at the Rijksakademie Amsterdam (2009-2010). He graduated from the University of Paris 8 (2014) and the ERG (École de Recherche Graphique, 2016) in Brussels, where he also teaches. Recent exhibitions and projects include: En quête des marges fluctuantes, Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Brussels; Wie is we?, Beursschouwburg, Brussels; Welkom, De Brakke Grond, Amsterdam (all 2020); Bamako Encounters Photography Biennial and Lubumbashi Biennale (both 2019); Coming People, S.M.A.K, Ghent (2018).

His residency took place in the context of his participation in the artistic advisory board and was organised in collaboration with Air Antwerpen.
