Astrid Vandercamere

Resident

Through a polymorphic practice of installation, video and publication, Astrid Vandercamere (1997, France) straddles between common culture and individual experiences to build a contemporary science fiction. Looking at alternative presents and repaired futures, she writes aliens, cyborgs, mutant teenagers and their gooey fantasies into being. The characters who inhabit these texts/installations attempt, each in their own way, to rethink the cultural references that define this sticky post nuclear world of our making.

During her residency, Astrid will work on the project My Radiant Neighbourhood, a fiction that imagines a small area in Flanders as the place where a lot of extra-terrestrial bodies and materials crash. Between the lines we read: political choices by Belgium, economic ambitions by private techno societies, and new forms of relationships with the humans inhabiting the land. This project will be in part realized in collaboration with the Brussels-based artist Tristan Bründler.

Alongside her personal practice, Astrid is also part of the Brussels collective La Satellite, which brings together feminist artists and writers around contemporary science fiction. La Satellite has been organising literary, artistic and performative events in Belgium for three years. Working and reflecting together, finding connections to nurture common references and grow practices are the issues at the heart of this collective and experimental space.
