Alex Schuurbiers
Resident
Alex Schuurbiers (1990, Netherlands) is a photographer and filmmaker living and working in Antwerp. Her practice focuses on the texture of analogue film as an active contributor to her storytelling: embedded in the past like a memory and tangible in the present like emotion. Alex’s work connects with the audience at a deep level, leaving the viewer with more questions than answers, opening the door to (self) exploration.
Alex studied Theater-, Film- and Literature-sciences at the University of Antwerp. She is also the founding member of Ursula, a female-led collective of artists working with the moving image. Her filmography includes Handwerk (2021), En Vagues (2022), Where I lay my head to rest and Song of Homecoming (both 2023). Her time at MORPHO will be spent developing two experimental documentaries about voice and silencing, intertwining tales of resilience of women across generations and places.
