Hussein Shikha
Resident
Hussein Shikha is a multidisciplinary artist, graphic designer, writer, and researcher. His work entails experimental film, animation, textile and interactive installations. Hussein takes the manipulation and transformation of the southern Iraqi carpet (with all its philosophies) as a starting point to understand design from Eastern and non-Eastern perspectives. In so doing, he examines possible shifts towards more inclusive and less Eurocentric perceptions of design. During his residency, Hussein will research the erasure of handmade Iraqi tapestries and the idea of ‘beauty’ that relates to Islamic art.
Hussein Shikha was born and raised in Iraq and moved to Antwerp in 2009 where he is currently based. He holds a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp and an Advanced Master’s degree of Research in Art and Design at Sint Lucas Antwerp. Hussein’s work was recently presented at iMAL, Brussels; Het Bos, Antwerp; and Kunsthal Extra City, Antwerp. Before MORPHO, he concluded residencies at Frans Masereel Centrum and Z33.
