Carina Erdmann & Steph Holl-Trieu

Carina Erdmann (1990, Germany) works at the intersection of game design, performance and philosophy to research role play as inquiry and rehearsal of social forms.
Steph Holl-Trieu (1995, Taipei) is an artist and writer whose work engages the social relations that condition modes of perceiving, the production of meaning, and experience. In their collaborative work, they explore role play as a practice of mediation between the abstract and concrete. Fusing critical theory and techniques of (Live-Action) Roleplay, their projects construct sites for collective research.

Their residency at MORPHO will be dedicated to the online publication project 'Condition Report: On the resistance of worlds' (working title). Conceived as a collection to accompany and support practice, it reviews and assembles methods, theoretical writing and scores. By engaging with the work of others, through playtests and interviews, as well as workshops facilitated by Carina and Steph, they hope to generate an exchange around the transmission of methods between practitioners. At stake is a critical approach to worlding, which demands for the analysis, deconstruction and reconstruction of the categories and conditions that order worlds in coherent narratives and rigid constellations.

Recent projects include The Planning Table, in collaboration with Lore D Selys, exhibited at Le Commun in Geneva, and Temporal Worlding, invited by the Goethe Institute Shanghai and Beijing. Games within larger collective projects have been commissioned by LAS Art Foundation and the Curatorial Collective for Public Art. They have given lectures, seminars, and workshops on role-play as a method for collaborative research at institutions such as MucemLab in Marseille, LUCA School of Arts in Brussels, ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem, Art as Social Practice at the Hessian Theatre Academy, and Zurich University of the Arts.
